混乱しやすい違いをクリアにして、会話で使えるようになろう!

ちょうど娘とディズニー英語システムのライムCAPのステップバイステップに挑戦しています。ライムでは、今回取り上げるboth, either, neitherについて出てきます。

使い分けがしっかりできて、会話の中で活用できるようになるのがゴールです。娘にもなじんでほしい表現です。

both, either, neitherの意味を理解する

例を挙げてみてみよう

A : Would you like tea or coffee?

B : Either. I don’t mind.

   I don’t want either.

   Neither.

3つ答えがありますが、いずれもお茶とコーヒーはいらないと断っています。

neitherはnot + eitherの意味で使われます。

eitherとneitherの違いがわかりにくい

either は肯定文と否定文で意味が変わります。肯定文では「どちらか一方の」否定文ではneither と意味が同じになるのでややこしいのです。つまり、「どちらも○○でない」という意味になります。

（肯定文）

There are two ways from here to the station. You can go either way.

（否定文）

He doesn’t either smoke or drink.

I’ve lived in New York and London, but I don’t like either.
